Texas Town's Fuel Boycott Draws Support, Doubt

The town of Beeville, Texas's boycott against the world's largest oil company will continue until gas is down to $1.30 a gallon, said County Judge Jimmy Martinez, the county's highest elected official. A gallon of regular unleaded cost $2.92 on average around the nation and $2.80 in the Corpus Christi region Sunday, according to AAA.

"I understand free enterprise. I understand we live in America. But, by golly, just because they have a license doesn't mean that they can rob," Martinez said.

A Beeville Bee-Picayune poll showed 72 percent of those surveyed plan to participate in the boycott.

The rural town of 13,000 people has fast-food restaurants and a Wal-Mart, but the long drive to other businesses and services is more than just an inconvenience for some locals.

See, I don't get it with a boycott. If you don't buy gas today or this week, you will eventually have to buy it and the way things are going it will get higher every week. I know the intent of the boycott, just don't see how it works for the consumer. These oil companies have so damned much money they don't notice or care who buys and who doesn't.

Dusty - You're right, and we need to work hard to get rid of the bastards that caused this and don't give a shit.

Coff - Not unless you have a spare time machine laying around.

POP - They're only boycotting the Exxon stations, not ALL stations.

If Exxon/Mobil is boycotted, they will just sell their crude oil on the open market to other companies looking for crude to refine. It's an easy train of thought. According to the NPR website, they would still be making a ridiculous profit doing it like that, and never selling another gallon of gas at retail.

Instead of Exxon-Mobile, just buy your gas from Citgo . There is no way they're buying gas from Exxon!

Bobbette - I'm not sure what you're implying. If you don't see a particular post, check the archives. Only the last 10 appear on the main page.

All - This town's Exxon boycott is merely a symbolic gesture. They know it will change nothing. But it will feel good, nothing wrong with that.
