More on "lock-bumping"
I receieved this in e-mail today from Kelly Shearon of Ash Tree Graphics. She had noted our prior post on this subject, and asked if I would be so kind as to pass on this alternative fix for the problem. Again, do these people want to sell you something? Of course! But this is an inexpensive answer to the problem.
Guard Your Home from Lock-Bumping Burglars With Sure Guard
You may have never heard of lock bumping, but as they say – “What you don’t know can kill you.” Lock bumping is the latest and most effective technique yet used by burglars to enter homes illegally, and there is more than a good chance that your home is a sitting target.
Close to 98 percent of the homes in America are fitted with a standard pin tumbler lock. To bypass this system, only a bump key and a mallet are needed. By inserting the key and tapping it with the mallet, a burglar can bounce the pins in your door lock and enter your home in a manner of minutes, and what is worse, without making enough noise to alert you if you are home.
But despite the recent media focus on lock bumping in burglaries, Toni Williams has little to fear. She recently invested in a Sure Guard Security Lock that prevents lock bumping by holding both deadbolts and regular door locks securely in their place. “I was initially going to buy a bump proof lock, but those run upwards of one hundred dollars,” Williams said. “When I found Sure Guard, I realized it was an equally effective and less expensive method of protecting my home.”
Sure Guard Security Locks are designed for easy installation. All that is needed is a hacksaw blade to cut a small groove in the top and bottom of your lock’s latch bolt. When the door is closed and the bolt is engaged, Sure Guard’s two prongs slide into the cut grooves and prevent the latch bolt from being retracted. The latch bolt cannot be dislodged unless the Sure Guard Lock is removed. “No method of lock bumping can bypass the Sure Guard lock,” said Byron Jones, owner of Sure Guard Security Locks. “A burglar would have to resort back to more time consuming methods to enter your home and few are willing take such a risk.”
Some security experts predict that instances of burglary will increase because of the ease of the lock bumping method, the details of which are currently all over the Internet. Videos that illustrate the effectiveness of lock bumping are even on well-frequented web sites like Google Video and YouTube. These videos outline the steps to bump a lock, making the technique a threat to homeowners across the country. With the ease of illegal entry into homes protected by a pin tumbler lock, some in the security industry are also raising concerns about how the method will affect insurance claims, as lock bumping leaves no visible signs of forced entry.
“It really quite alarming,” said Steve Holt, who lives in a densely populated Boston neighborhood. “You now have this nagging fear in the back of your mind when you leave your home or when you go to bed. Where you once felt safe, you now feel afraid that you’re going to be the next victim. That’s no way to live in your own home.”
Sure Guard is currently the only alternative to more expensive bump proof locks like Medico or Multi-Lock. You might expect such a state-of-the-art security device to cost upwards of $100, but Sure Guard Security Locks retail for just $12.99. Two Sure Guard Security Locks come in a pack and can be installed in less than 15 minutes.
“Obviously there’s no foolproof method when it comes to keeping a burglar out, but Sure Guard is the answer to lock bumping,” Jones said.
The Sure Guard Security System is now apart of Williams’ daily routine. “When I leave for work, I close and lock the door, insert the Sure Guard lock and then I leave through the garage. Then at night, I secure the door before I go to bed,” she said. The peace of mind I have from knowing my home and my family are safe has been wonderful.”
