Lady Bird Johnson dies at 94
This deserves a much longer post, due to her status as a former first lady and also as a relative of mine. However, I felt it was important to honor her passing this evening regardless of the length of commentary. Thank you, Claudia, for your environmental work - you started a movement that we're proud to continue to this day. . .
Lady Bird Johnson, the former first lady who championed conservation and worked tenaciously for the political career of her husband, Lyndon B. Johnson, died Wednesday, a family spokeswoman said. She was 94.
Johnson, who suffered a stroke in 2002 that affected her ability to speak, returned home late last month after a week at Seton Medical Center, where she'd been admitted for a low-grade fever.
She died at her Austin home of natural causes about 5:18 p.m. EDT. Elizabeth Christian, the spokeswoman, said she was surrounded by family and friends.

I just saw this on the news before I looked at your site. I didn't know she was a relative of yours. She just seemed so nice and down to earth. You rarely hear anyone speak of her work with conservation. In fact, she's rarely mentioned at all. Very sad. I'll look on the tv news and see if they say anything...been too busy to turn the set on today.
Later....
I heard it yesterday afternoon. I loved her low-brow personality. She didn't put on 'airs'. She was the mother of the conservation movement in the modern age in the political arena.
Lyndon has his Lady Bird back.
I always loved Lady Bird. She did much more for this country than her husband ever did. Of course, I am also a big supporter of all the things Lady Bird supported. I didn't know you were related. You come from good stock, John.
Thank you. I just wanted to get something posted last night in her memory. My mom and Lyndon were second cousins; not a close relation, but worth acknowledging.
