Scandal GOP Style

A lurid political scandal surrounding a former Representative's inappropriate messages to underage Congressional pages has put the House Republican leadership in peril. Former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) resigned Friday after e-mails and instant messages he sent to Congressional pages, some as young as 16, were made public. Top Republicans, including Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and majority leader John Boehner (R-OH), knew about the e-mails for months, yet said nothing. NRCC Chairman Tom Reynolds may have contributed to Foley's reelection campaign after finding out about the e-mails.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid (D-NV) raised the "possibility that Republican leaders in the House of Representatives knew there was a problem and ignored it to preserve a congressional seat this election year." Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) said, "It's outrageous...it really makes me nervous that they might have tried to cover this up."

The FBI launched an investigation into the e-mails yesterday.

As a retired teacher, I have dealt with students who have been molested. As an adult I have friends with wives or have themselves been molested. Being sexually molested follows a person forever.

Enough said.

I've read the IM's and emails and I detest this guy. However, no one has said he broke any laws including the federal child-endangerment act.

What he did wasn’t illegal. In Washington D.C. the age of consent is 16.

The boy’s parents contacted Republican leadership in Congress to alert them of the problem, but didn’t want the matter to go any further than that.

And let’s not forget that this sordid incident isn’t all that different from Bill Clinton getting a hummer in the oval office. Both instances involved inappropriate, but completely legal, sexual contact (in Clinton’s case physical, in Foley’s case simply electronic) between a politician and a subordinate. In Clinton’s case Democrats defended this inappropriate infidelity. In Foley’s case, he immediately resigned.

You liberals amaze me.

We hear this over and over from the right.

Preying on children is morally equivalent to sex between consenting adults for the Republican party. This is typical - "by any means necessary". They have become so corrupt they will even defend sexual predators if it means they have a chance to keep a single House seat.

Do they REALLY believe this stuff - I mean they can't all be this morally bankrupt can they?

Jeff - Apparently they ARE.

MM - I don't care what the age of consent in DC is; we're talking about FL. And I STILL don't care what the age there is either. It's child molesting.

Clinton committed a moral crime.
Foley's a child molester. If you can't see the difference, oh what's the use. . .go drink s'more kool-aid, dumbass.

Foley needs to be investigated and I think that there may well be other Republicans in their leadership who should also be investigated.

I absolutely detest it when our elected officials behave in this manner...

I do not care what Party they belong to.

Foley is a disgrace and I hope he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
