What Does Rep. Souder Have Against Working Women?

Americans United for Change Asks: What Does Rep. Souder Have Against Working Women?

Souder Votes Pro-Discrimination AGAIN!!!!

Washington D.C. – Americans United for Change called on Rep. Mark Souder, (R-IN) to explain his vote against giving Indiana’s women, who have been discriminated against, the right to fight for equal wages in these tough times.

“Last night Rep. Souder sent a disturbing message to those women lucky enough to still have a job in this terrible economy: ‘Your work doesn’t matter as much as mine’,” said Caren Benjamin, deputy director of Americans United for Change, the progressive group behind the Bush Legacy Tour. “Gender-based paycheck discrimination hurts everyone. In times like these, equal pay for equal work is a matter of survival for families.”

Yesterday, Souder voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act, which closes loopholes that have allowed employers to discriminate against working women by paying them less than men.

Statistically, across the nation, women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes; African American women earn just 63 cents for every dollar a man makes, and Hispanic American women make 52 cents for every dollar a man makes.

Earlier this year, Souder voted to block the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, meaningful legislation that would level the playing field for women and men who have been victims of pay discrimination by allowing them to seek justice in the courts.

“Fortunately, most members of Congress recognize that we have emerged from the dark ages where women were not supposed to work outside of the home, let alone earn what men do. It’s too bad that despite the highest unemployment rate in years, and the clear need for working people to earn fair wages, that Rep. Souder can’t see his way into the light of the 21st century,” Benjamin added.

I know someone who supports fair wage legislation:

Montagano added to DCCC's "emerging candidates" list

Some great new news (Okay, I heard about it several days ago, but great news nonetheless! I received the following email today from the Michael Montagano campaign, and would like to share it with you here. Please help in any way that you can. We simply cannot allow another term for Mark Souder, any more than we can allow a third Bush McCain term.

MONTAGANO ADDED TO THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE'S RED TO BLUE "EMERGING CANDIDATE" LIST - 6/23/2008

Dear Montagano for Congress supporter,

I have some very exciting news for you. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) just announced that our campaign has been added to their Red to Blue "Emerging Candidate" list. I am now the only democratic challenger in Indiana, one of few from the Midwest, one of only 50 nationwide to secure this national party recognition.

By adding us to the "Emerging Candidate" list, the national party has expressed confidence that I will be the next congressman from Indiana.

It's a reflection of what we have known for a while: That Northeast Indiana is hungry for change, that I will deliver it, and that Mark Souder is extremely vulnerable.

But now is not the time to celebrate… we have to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

We have less than seven days before the end of this reporting quarter, June 30, 2008, to raise the necessary funds to get our message out there. We have launched an initiative to raise $50,000 in our last week.

We are asking each website visitor to consider a small contribution of $25, $50 or $100 dollars to our campaign today. Click here to make your secure online contribution to our campaign:

Bye Bye to Marky Mark

I thank you for your consideration of this contribution and I look forward to working with you on the way to victory in November.

Sincerely,

Mike Montagano
