Despite his, um, substance abuse problems (or perhaps because of them?), Hunter S. Thompson probably had the keenest insight of any commentator into the dark side of late 20th and early 21st century America. Perhaps not a good sense of what is GOOD about America, but an excellent understanding of what is wrong with us.
