Senator Bayh Secures Funds For Fort Wayne Clinton Street Bridge

-As reported by Marie @ Hoosier Democrats

The Clinton Street bridge that spans the St. Marys River just north of Headwaters Park has been slated for total replacement for several years. Clinton Street, also U.S. 27, is maintained by the Indiana Department of Transportation, or INDOT, which wants to replace the bridge in 2010.

In November 2004, the city announced its intention to chip in $1 million to make the bridge an “architecturally significant gateway” into downtown.

Circumstances changed, and that $1 million eventually went for another project. However, Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., secured $4 million in federal funds “earmarked for us to be allocated toward that bridge and to make it a real signature piece,” said Sharon Feasel, a redevelopment specialist for the city. Added to the $2 million INDOT will spend on the project, the budget to replace the bridge is about $6 million.

Thank you Senator Bayh!!!!

This is yet another great example of wasteful "Pork Barrel Spending" at the Federal level.

Why should the Federal Government fund this project when we have a Federal Debt that is over 8 Trillion dollars?

Who will pay for this?

Our kids and grandkids...

Federal spending is out of control...

Mike,
I agree that federal spending AND the federal debt are out of control. However, I do NOT beleive that neglecting infrastructure is the answer to this. It is quite apparent that the current occupant of the white house recklessly spent billions on unnecesary wars and tax cuts for the super wealthy. We HAD a surplus thanks to Mr.Clinton and Mr.Gore, who, by the way, cut government and government spending dramatically. I don't have the answers as to how to dig out of this deep hole created by BushCo. I do, however, know the first step that needs to be taken. . .Get rid of the architects.

I cant beleive that someone in local government/ or paid for by our local government actualy suggested the "Rev. martin luther King Jr" bridge should be a "suspension bridge". think about that one for a minute. and then jump on them for their idiocy....

Dear Anonymous - why is it not okay for local government to think about making things nice? Why is it "idiocy" (your lovely word) to make the bridge accessible for the many pedestrians and bikers who attempt to cross over it, especially in the summer and during festivals?

I am certainly not against infrastructure projects.

I am against The Federal Government paying for infrastructure projects. It is quite simply NOT their job. The role of The Federal Government is well defined in The Constitution. I think The Federal government should stop funding local projects, period.

Mike,

I get your point, and while it IS a valid one, there often are gray areas in this black and white world that we reside in. This is a needed project, local funding fell through, and federal funding is better spent on a "pork" issue like this than say, GWB's personal vendettas. This isn't a bridge to an island in Alaska that we're discussing here.

CBP,
Should I call it a bridge to the 21st Century? (grin)

I would be more likely to call it "The Bridge to The Federal Debt ceiling."

Did you know they are going to have to raise the national Debt limit, again?

When I drive over the new bridge I will think of my kids and grandkids. They are really going to hate what we did to this Country by overspending on EVERYTHING.

Mike,
I have a deal for you. You figure out how to return the 100's of billions of dollars spent in the "war" in Iraq and tax cuts for the super wealthy, and I will join your team. It's very difficult for me to care much about a few million when all of those billions have been squandered for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON.

I have to be honest with you John; we cannot get our money back. What we can do is elect new politicians. I do NOT plan on voting for a single Federal Incumbent this year.

Do you?

I know that money's gone. I'm just astounded at what has been done to this country's financial picture over the last six long years. And yes, Evan has my vote. He's probably the only one. I definately wish to see Souder go away.

John,

Bush has beat the left at their own game and many are bitter at him for it. John, you decry Bush for overspending on an unjustified war, yet you embrace unecessary federal spending on a local bridge. Anyone else see the problem?

In principle, there is hardly difference between democrats and republicans anymore. The only thing left to argue about is where to spend the stolen cash; but they're still both theives.

You may not miss the higher taxes since you live in the "have and have more" district. I do. Theft is wrong, no matter if the wealthy advocate it or not.
