Stimulus Package Clears House

ZERO Republicans voted for it!

A nearly $820 billion stimulus package passed the House of Representatives Wednesday without a single Republican vote. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it stands a better chance of picking up at least a modicum of bipartisan support.

Approval of the bill is a victory for President Barack Obama and comes only eight days after his inauguration -- the swiftest passage of such a massive package in American history. The vote was 244-188, with 11 Democrats crossing party lines and opposing the measure.

"Another week that we delay is another 100,000 or more people unemployed. I don't think we want that on our consciences," said Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the leading architects of the legislation. "There are an awful lot of people in this chamber who think like Herbert Hoover."

I really thought President Obama would NOT start out with a stimulus package chock full of pork! What was he thinking!!!???

It would have been much better to have two bills. One with no pork and one with pork only.

If the massive, pork laden bill passes the Senate, then I see a no-contest, no fillibuster, smooth sailing, whatever he wants goes four year presidency.

I'm all for a well planned, thought out all the way through the re-payment bailout in order to stimulate the economy, but why does it have to be pork ladened?

Pork - it's the other white meat!!!

Stan - You're spouting right-wing talking points. There is no pork in this bill. Do some research rather than listening to opposition drivel.

John - First off, I believe that not one person has read the entire bill! I can't even find a copy of it on the internet.

They took out the 200 million for condoms and the 200 million to grass the National Mall. But there are still things like 335 million for sexual transmitted disease in the bill, in addition to 276 million for new computers at the State Department, ACORN money???

Maybe I should re-phrase the word *pork* with *non-productive stimulus*.

What about all the money for the electronic medical record? Who do you think that's going to benefit? I don't even want it because I don't what the government mishandling my personal health information!!! They are not even going to allow you to opt out of it!!! What??? Mandatory health records... on a computer... with oversite by our government??? Is this stimulus? Yes, up my ass!!!

Ok, now you are just making me feel guilty!!!

The MSM is using the word *pork*, but what they are really saying is that not all of the money is for direct job creation.

I also think the amount (in question) is very small compared to the total sitmulus amount, but...a mil here and a mil there is certainly not peanuts!

I'll continue to follow the spending closely, as I'm sure you will as well. I just got bent a bit driving home from work and hearing about all the *pork* in the bill... only to find out that it's not the other white meat!!!
