Economy Brings Back Layaway
A payment method that became decidedly passe in the 1980s is being promoted again this holiday season as a way for budget-conscious shoppers to buy gifts without breaking the bank:

in the days before the huge rise in credit cards- my mom used layaways. she budgeted (imagine!) so much a week and it worked just fine. i get annoyed at bigger ticket places who don't have layaway- but i suppose it's a pain for them and you do need a big storage area. i think perhaps some of the old ways are not so bad though :)
Funny thing is, my wife asked a local K-Mart about layaway a couple of months ago - the reply? We phased that out years ago. . .
