Click on the Jiffy Lube logo below for an enlightening report from KNBC - Los Angeles:

Yet another good reason to change your own motor oil, or at least invest in some spy cams. . .

WOW! Thanks for posting that!

I've seen exposes like that before on TV. That kind of shit is rampant throughout this country and those guys (companies) need to pay- not just reimburse and say, "we'll look into that".

Among others, I watched one a few years back where a news company pulled a sting with several different cars where the shop employees were using an ice pick to poke a hole through the radiators, telling unsuspecting women about the "serious problem", patching the hole that they made with JB Weld, spray painting the radiators black & charging them full-list retail for the "new" radiator that had to be installed.

Anyway, just wanted to share that one that I remembered explicitly.

Thanks for the post! I'm sure there are lots more horror stories out there. The more people that are aware of this shit, the better.

Unfortunately, with our world of "instant gratification" many people just do not want to devote the time needed to auto maintenance, unlike generations in the past. And that is truly sad.

After your HOUSE, your vehicle is the most expensive outlay of money (unless your name is Rockefeller and you own boats, planes and the like), and you should bone up on the HOWS, WHATS, and WHYS about vehicles and their upkeep.

I'm not saying become a motorhead, but the INFORMED consumer is usually the best prepared for whatever may come down the pike.

Considering the amount of time we all have to sepnd these days behind the wheel (with jobs getting farter away PLUS increased traffic), it makes good sense to know how a vehicle "acts", "feels" and what sounds it's NOT supposed to make. Also, that "E" in the gas gauge does NOT mean "excellent"...lol.

Never rely solely on those "idiot lights" on the dash...most of them are there to let you know that trouble has most certainly ALREADY occured, and that you are going to be walking sooner than you think.
Other lights are there to get you to come in for service...and I take this as a marketing ploy. Oil gets changed every 3000 miles (sooner if you do more city stop-and-go driving), trans fluid...every 50K. I don;t NEED a dumb light to tell me that...I know when I should go in for service.

It's not rocket science, but lots of service mechanics would lead you to think so. Still, with ALL the computer "junk" under the hood, you need an electrical engineering grad with a minor in computer science to fix things. But that's what diagnostic devices are for. The car tells THEM what is wrong...cool, huh?

ANY place that takes advantage of ANY consumer needs to have whatever licenses they have revoked, and be shut down for good. At the prices we have to pay to keep motoring (even excluding the gas-goughing pumps) it's a no-brainer that each of us needs to know certain basics about our vehicle. And with knowledge comes power.

B.G.
