Obama opens up a 10-point lead

Barack Obama leads Hillary Clinton by 10 percentage points in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to the latest Gallup daily tracking poll.

That's Obama's biggest lead of the year so far, and the first double-digit lead for either candidate since a February 4-6 poll, when Clinton outpaced Obama by 11 percentage points.

The latest results are based on Gallup Poll Daily tracking conducted March 27-29. Obama did particularly well in interviewing conducted on March 29.

You Tell Me

Welcome to Monday!!! Why am I so happy on a Monday morning? The love of my life returns today from a brief sabbatical with family and I don't do well with being separated from her. Plus, I finally got to read what the stupid saying on all of those Jeeps actually is! That's my take, but since it IS Caption Monday, YOU tell ME. . .

I gotta add that this cop probably wanted to laugh out loud as it was only a matter of time before he actually ran across this scene! LOL

Today's Laugh

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting and an old guy said: Well, for example, the other day I went downtown and went into a shop. I was only in there for about 5 minutes and when I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket I went up to him and said, “Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a break”?

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a “Nazi.” He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires.

So I called him a “doughnut eating Gestapo.” He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket.
This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Personally, I didn’t care. I came downtown on the bus and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said “Hillary in ‘08.” I try to have a little fun each day now that I’m retired. It’s important to my health.

Memorial Coliseum Campaign Event?

We've had Bill Clinton at the Grand Wayne Center; we've had Hillary Clinton at Sara's Family Restaurant; Barack Obama's campaign had their downtown grand opening yesterday. What could be next now that Fort Wayne is officially on the political map this year? Political Notebook reports that we may see Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton appear at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum before Indiana's May 6th primary:

One influential Fort Wayne Democrat let it slip last week that staffers for Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign are considering an event at Memorial Coliseum in the coming weeks.

So what are the chances?

Coliseum General Manager Randy Brown said he has been approached either directly or indirectly by both Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign about possible dates.

“Nothing’s even on hold for anything, but it could be interesting couldn’t it?” Brown said. “I don’t know if it is even going to go anywhere, but I think it would be a lot of fun if it happened.”

Brown said both candidates, depending on the night chosen, would draw large crowds. But he gave the edge to Obama.

“Certainly Mr. Obama, I think just by nature of his popularity and people from Ohio and Michigan coming over as well, could easily do 11,000 people for an appearance.”

Nothing's Changed

Taking it up the, err. . .tank!

I remember when gas first surpassed $1 per gallon in 1980. I was 16 years old and driving a 1967 Bonneville ragtop with a big-block 400 topped with a Carter automatic four-barrel carb. I got 10 miles per gallon. That was bad, but Dad paid for my gas, and I couldn't understand what the big deal was. After all, gas was $.80 the year before!

These days, however, I can relate more to Dad's grumbling about paying a mere $.25 per gallon 8 years before. When I first entered the transportation industry in 2000, diesel fuel was $1.39. Now, in the same timespan that Dad referred to, diesel has increased to $4.19! My fuel costs have risen from a monthly average of $300 to over $200 per week!

You'll have to excuse me if I feel no sympathy for Exxon-Mobil and their record profits donated by myself and the rest of you fine folks.

A visit from Senator Hillary Clinton

Senator Hillary Clinton visited Sara's Family Restaurant in the Village at Coventry in Fort Wayne on Friday. Many people were standing outside to listen to the presidential hopeful's message. A lucky few got passes to dine with her. Clinton's campaign handed out about 100 wristbands to get in on a first-come first-serve basis; with me (Stan Matuska) being one of those 100!

A lot of people asked me why I would want to attend. Those would be either Obama supporters or Republicans. I told them that for one, she was coming to a location about a block from my office. She is a former First Lady, and may even be the next President of the United States. She is a also a Democrat. There were also many other famous faces in the crowd, such as Win Moses, Karen Goldner and Mayor Tom Henry.

If nothing else, it was an interesting experience to see what goes into one of these appearances. The security was immense with buses blocking the sides of the restaurant, dogs (bomb sniffing?), secret service and police. There was a wall full of cameras and camera crew! Hillary sat at a table with six average citizens. The rest of the crowd were seated behind her. I was in the 3rd row behind her (about 10-12 ft). So most of my view of Hillary was the back side of her head.

Hillary let each person at her table ask her a question, then she took a few questions from the patrons. She was running about 45 minutes behind schedule and she still had to attend a Muncie Indiana rally. Most questions were about the economy and jobs. The entire event was shown live on local television. I found the video footage at an Indy site http://www.wishtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8087248 but it is very lengthy.

I actually asked permission to post this on this blog because I know John is, well, let's just say, not as fond of Hillary as he is of Obama =)

First and foremost, I want a Democrat to win the presidency. To get there, we need the Democrat most likely to beat McCain to win the nomination. I don't know if that's Hillary or Obama. I would think all Democrats would support the candidate who wins the nomination no matter which one it is.

Unlike most rumors of risque words images hidden in Disney’s animated films, this one is clearly true, and the images in question were undeniably purposely inserted into the movie. Approximately 38 minutes into the film, as rodents Bianca and Bernard fly through the city in a sardine can, the image of a topless woman appears in a window in the background in two non-consecutive frames. Friday Nite Retro

Okay, tonight's edition isn't really retro, but it features an artist that I've liked for some time and he may have slipped under your radar: Jack Johnson. The Hawaiian-born Johnson, 32, is the son of a famous surfer. In addition to that interest, he had a natural inclination towards music and began playing guitar at an early age. Ben Harper's producer "discovered" him in 2000, and helped him produce his first album, Brushfire Fairytales, in early 2001 with Harper and his lap steel guitar making a guest appearance.

Flake

Bubble Toes

Johnson has stated in several interviews that a big part of his success involved his friends recording "bootlegs" of his tracks and distributing them at surf competitions. Johnson has also stated that he supports the sharing of live recordings and bootlegs of his music.

"It's pretty crazy. There's stuff I would find online that I'd only given to one friend, so I know how it got there," Johnson says. "It's been a spider-web effect. That's the whole reason all this [success] started. I'm sure there's lots of people who hate [downloading], but I really dig it."

The Horizon has been Defeated

Wasting Time

As a professional surfer, Johnson endured an accident at Pipeline in which his front teeth were knocked out and he received more than 150 stitches. The accident allowed time for Jack to start on his new passions, the guitar and making music. He stated about the accident,
"I like to joke that I hit my head so hard that that's why I'm so mellow, but I think it did mellow me out."

Blue Majority endorses Obama

Open Left - I just made my first contribution to Barack Obama, and I did it though the Blue Majority page on Act Blue. Now, I am asking you to do the same, since Barack Obama is the latest candidate to be added to the Blue Majority page.

Daily Kos - It's clear our communities have become heavily pro-Obama, especially as Clinton's only path to victory is via coup by super delegate and civil war, and she doesn't give a damn.

Swing State Project - Barack Obama will hold the lead in elected delegates after the last primary is conducted, and the only way Hillary Clinton can secure the nomination is if unpledged superdelegates choose to subvert the will of the pledged delegates. Given that Clinton's rolled up very few superdelegate endorsements since Super Tuesday, and the discord a superdelegate-based victory might foment within the party, this is an extremely unlikely development.

Latest NBC-WSJ Poll Results

One of the two Democrats running for president took a hit in the poll numbers over the last two weeks - and not the one you're thinking. . .

"On one of the most critical questions we've been tracking for a few months, Obama showed resilience. When asked if the three presidential candidates could be successful in uniting the country if they were elected president, 60 percent of all voters believed Obama could be successful at doing this, 58 percent of all voters said McCain could unite the country while only 46 percent of voters said the same about Clinton. All three candidates saw dips on this issue, by the way. In January, 67 percent thought Obama could unite the country; 68 percent thought McCain could do it; and 55 percent said Clinton would be able to pull it off. "

Richard Widmark has died at 93

Richard Widmark died at home Monday in Roxbury, Connecticut. The actor, 93, had suffered a decline in health recently due to a recent fractured verterbra. He is survived by his wife, Susan Blanchard, and daughter Anne Heath Widmark from his previous marriage to Jean Hazlewood , who died in 1997. Widmark and Blanchard, who was also married to Henry Fonda, were married in 1999.

Widmark's most famous role was that of the psychopathic killer in the 1947 classic "Kiss of Death". The film featured a chilling scene where Widmark's character ties up an old lady in a wheelchair with a piece of cord and then shoves her down a flight of stairs to her death, as he cackles dementedly.

Widmark appeared in more than 60 other films, including The Alamo with John Wayne, Judgement at Nuremberg, How the West was Won, and Murder on the Orient Express.

Dead Man has a tale to tell

Zach Dunlap, pictured at left, died last November 19th in an ATV accident. Apparently somebody forgot to inform him of that incident. Dunlap, 21, of Frederick, Oklahoma, said he has no recollection of the crash but remembers the doctor pronouncing him dead.

His family had approved donation of his organs and were paying their final respects when he reacted to a pen knife being scraped against his foot. After his foot moved, pressure was applied under his fingernail which also caused movement in his hands. Zach spent another 48 days in the hospital, but returned home to continue his long recovery.

His father, describing the results of his son's brain scan, said "There was no activity at all, no blood flow at all." His mother, Pam, said that when she discovered he was still alive, "That was the most miraculous feeling. We had gone, like I said, from the lowest possible emotion that a parent could feel to the top of the mountains again".

Dunlap now has the lifesaving pocketknife that was scraped across his foot, causing the first reaction. He snarked, "Only the good die young, so I didn't go."

"Worst Person Ever"!

With apologies to Olbermann:

On the 5th anniversary of the Iraq invasion, ABC’s Good Morning America aired an interview with Vice President Cheney on the war. During the segment, Cheney flatly told White House correspondent Martha Raddatz that he doesn’t care about the American public’s views on the war:

Today, after a nine-day overseas trip to Iraq, Cheney was asked about the effect on the nation of today's grim milestone of at least 4,000 U.S. deaths over the five-year Iraq war. Cheney, "They volunteered."

Can we take a page from the middle east and publicly stone this mother fucker to death?

Hillary's Nasty Pastorate

Wonder why Hillary Clinton has remained relatively silent (at least until today in Philly) regarding inflamed remarks by Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright? Turns out that when it comes to unsavory religious affiliations, she's a lot more vulnerable than Obama.

You can find all about it in a widely under-read article in the September 2007 issue of Mother Jones, in which Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet reported that "through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as "The "Fellowship," also known as The Family. But it won't be a secret much longer. Jeff Sharlet's shocking exposé The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power will be published in May.

Just to grab your attention, here are a few of Hillary's "Family" co-members: Sam Brownback, Ed Meese, John Ashcroft, James Inhofe and Rick Santorum. Yep. Go read all about it!

The Obama Doctrine

Strong and RIGHT

Barack Obama is offering the most sweeping liberal foreign-policy critique heard from a serious presidential contender in decades. It cuts to the heart of traditional Democratic timidity. "It's time to reject the counsel that says the American people would rather have someone who is strong and wrong than someone who is weak and right," Obama said in a January speech. "It's time to say that we are the party that is going to be strong and right." (The Democrat who counseled that Americans wanted someone strong and wrong, not weak and right? That was Bill Clinton in 2002.)

But to understand what Obama is proposing, it's important to ask: What, exactly, is the mind-set that led to the war? What will it mean to end it? And what will take its place? Click HERE to get the answers to these questions and more. . .

To answer these questions, spoke at length with Obama's foreign-policy brain trust, the advisers who will craft and implement a new global strategy if he wins the nomination and the general election. They envision a doctrine that first ends the politics of fear and then moves beyond a hollow, sloganeering "democracy promotion" agenda in favor of "dignity promotion," to fix the conditions of misery that breed anti-Americanism and prevent liberty, justice, and prosperity from taking root. An inextricable part of that doctrine is a relentless and thorough destruction of al-Qaeda. Is this hawkish? Is this dovish? It's both and neither -- an overhaul not just of our foreign policy but of how we think about foreign policy. And it might just be the future of American global leadership.

97% of US death toll came after 'Mission Accomplished'

Death Toll now at 4,000.

A roadside bomb which killed four American soldiers yesterday has brought the official death toll in Iraq to 4,000. The four soldiers died when their vehicle was hit while on patrol late Sunday in southern Baghdad. Another 29,000 American soldiers have been wounded thus far in the conflict.

At least 97 percent of the deaths occurred after US President George W. Bush announced the end of "major combat" in Iraq on May 1, 2003, as the military became caught between a raging anti-American insurgency and brutal sectarian strife unleashed since the toppling of Saddam.

140 American servicemembers died before May 1, 2003, out of a total 4,000.

Despite the losses, Bush on the eve of the war's fifth anniversary defended his decision to invade Iraq, vowing no retreat as he promised American soldiers would triumph despite the "high cost in lives and treasure."

2007 was the deadliest year for the military in Iraq when it lost 901 troops on the back of the "surge", which saw an extra 30,000 soldiers pushed into the meat grinder in an effort to turn the tide of violence that has killed tens of thousands of Iraqis. This figure compares with 486 deaths in 2003, 849 in 2004, 846 in 2005 and 822 in 2006. So far this year, 96 soldiers have died.

But the hallmark of this war has been the high wounded-to-killed ratio, partly because of advances in battlefield medicine, enhanced protective gear worn by soldiers and reinforced armored vehicles. There have been about 15 soldiers wounded for every fatality in Iraq, compared with 2.6 per death in Vietnam and 2.8 in Korea.

How the Creative Economy is Making the Place Where You Live the Most Important Decision of Your Life

It’s a mantra of the age of globalization that where you live doesn’t matter: you can telecommute to your high-tech Silicon Valley job, a ski-slope in Idaho, a beach in Hawaii or a loft in Chicago; you can innovate from Shanghai or Bangalore.

According to Richard Florida, this is wrong. Place is not only important, it’s more important than ever.

Globalization is not flattening the world; on the contrary, the world is spiky. Place is becoming more relevant to the global economy and our individual lives. The choice of where to live, therefore, is not an arbitrary one. It is arguably the most important decision we make, as important as choosing a spouse or a career. In fact, place exerts powerful influence over the jobs and careers we have access to, the people meet and our “mating markets” and our ability to lead happy and fulfilled lives.

Who’s Your City provides the first ever-rankings of cities by life-stage, rating the best places for singles, young families and empty-nesters. And it grounds its new ideas and data to provide an essential guide for the more than 40 million Americans of who move each year on how to choose where to live, and what those choices mean for their lives, happiness and communities.

My place finder results:

(Not a huge surprise - I was born in The Golden State and am a progressive Democrat)

You should probably leave Fort Wayne, Indiana - final score:34 (below the average [50.6] score)
You should definitely consider moving to San Francisco - final score:57 (amongst the highest scores)
You should probably not move to Denver - final score:50 (below the average [50.6] score)
You should probably not move to Washington, DC -final score:50 (below the average [50.6] score)
You should definitely consider moving to Seattle -final score:62 (amongst the highest scores)

Pastor Wright - Redux

Unedited video shows a different story

There's been alot of discussion about Pastor Jeremiah Wright, and much further discussion about the effects of his oratory on Barack Obama. I took the time tonight to sit down and watch this "unedited by the media" version of Pastor Wright's speech after 9-11, and I have to tell you, I don't disagree a bit with what the man states in this sermon. I strongly encourage you to spend 15 minutes and review it for yourself:

Speak Out against Daylight Savings Time

For those of you who would prefer to NOT have DST in Indiana, and don't care to move to Hawaii or Arizona, there is a website where you can sign an e-petition to have the issue placed on the November ballot as a referendum (since the issue was never put to a vote in the first place). E-petitions are generally ineffective, especially the ones where you just add your name to a long list and forward it on to everybody. But this is one where you go to a website and give your full name and address.

This "petition" may not be fully effective either, but it's structured in a way that at least it has a chance of being taken seriously. In any case, it can't hurt.Of course, it also never hurts to pressure your elected officials as well, particularly in an election year where "change" looms large on the agenda and eagerness to appease the populace abounds. . .

Go to www.no2inddst.net to sign up. You have until August.

"Bad Boy Bill" rides again!

Three of those fingers appear to be pointing back at him. . .

Quick! Somebody dial out on that "3 A.M." line, and tell Hillary that it's time to pull on the choker chain again:

As Senator Barack Obama folded his arms and looked on, one of his leading military advisers forcefully defended Mr. Obama's patriotism here Saturday and accused former President Bill Clinton of trying to employ "divisive attacks" to promote his wife's presidential candidacy.

Mr. Clinton, in a speech to voters in North Carolina on Friday, said "it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country."

At a town meeting here Saturday, retired Air Force Gen. Merrill A. McPeak, who is a co-chairman of Mr. Obama's campaign, read the quote from Mr. Clinton. A few members of the audience gasped and hissed at the former president's words.

"Let me say first, we will have such an election this year because both Barack Obama and John McCain are great patriots who love this country and are devoted to it -- so is Hillary Clinton," General McPeak said, speaking over loud applause. "Any suggestion to the contrary is flat wrong."

Mr. Obama, on his first trip to Oregon before the state's primary on May 13, did not address the comments from Mr. Clinton. He stood a few feet away from the retired general as he made his remarks before a crowd of more than 1,500 people in a Medford community center.

McPeak, later firing back a response , compared former President Bill Clinton to Joseph McCarthy in questioning Obama's patriotism. "It sounds more like McCarthy," McPeak said. "I grew up, I was going to college when Joe McCarthy was accusing good Americans of being traitors, so I've had enough of it."

Poll: Majority Doesn't Believe Obama Shares Wright's Views

A new Fox News poll, the first major poll taken since Barack Obama's big speech on race relations, shows that the effect of the Jeremiah Wright flap might not be so bad after all.

By a 57%-24% margin, registered votes do not believe that Obama shares Wright's controversial views. The internals show only 17% of Democrats saying Obama shares Wright's ideas, along with 20% of independents and 36% of Republicans.

Fox also asked respondents whether they had doubts about Obama because of his association with Wright. The results: 35% Yes, 54% No, with the numbers standing at 26%-66% for Democrats, 27%-61% among independents, and 56%-33% with Republicans.

Obama - More Voices

Barack Obama talked earlier this week about bridging divides and bringing people together to solve our common problems. That's not just the theme of this campaign -- it's been the theme of his life's work.

When Barack came back to Chicago after law school, he led a voter registration drive to attract people to the political process. Watch this short video about Barack's voter registration efforts and do something to help register new voters in the upcoming states:

Registering voters and bringing more voices into the political process is what this campaign is all about. In the ten contests left in this race, we have an opportunity to build a base of support that will lead Democrats to victory up and down the ballot in November. But more importantly, we have the chance to transform our party and our politics.

By bringing in new voters and encouraging voters who have gotten fed up to get involved again, we can move beyond the divisive and petty tactics that have dominated our politics for far too long. We can send a message that we're ready for something new -- something positive that brings us together around a shared goal of a better future for all Americans.

You can help build our movement and create a lasting change in our party and in our country.

Save the planet, but save yourself first!!!

Would you place your families health in jeopardy to help Al Gore and prevent global warming? Well, apparently helping to save the planet is a bit more dangerous than any of us might have imagined. Mercury is deadly and dangerous. Well, apparently we are asking each other day after day to store more deadly mercury into our homes in order to save the planet. Don't worry - it's only a problem if you drop it!!!

Stan - From Popular Mechanics:

How much mercury is contained in a CFL?
Each bulb contains an average of 5 milligrams of mercury, “which is just enough to cover a ballpoint pen tip,” says Leslie, associate director of the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer. “Though it’s nothing to laugh at, unless you wipe up mercury [without gloves] and then lick your hand, you’re probably going to be okay.”

So, wear gloves, keep your tongue where it belongs and, relax. . . =)

Trouble in the "FOX den"

"Anchors Away!"

I am about to utter words that will make me feel very dirty. But they must be said. . .I am proud of Chris Wallace and Brian Kilmeade. I would normally find no common ground with either FOX News anchor, but today they stood up to the blatant race-baiting and distortion tactics that their network uses daily in it's attempts to shape public opinion. And for that they are to be commended:

Fox News' very own anchors are speaking out — and walking off — over what they perceive to be "Obama-bashing" on their network.

This morning on "Fox and Friends," Brian Kilmeade walked off the set after a dispute with his co-hosts Gretchen Carlson (she who celebrates deadly floods) and Steve DoucheyDoocy over Obama's comment that his grandmother is a "typical white person." Kilmeade argued that the remark needed to be taken in context and eventually got so fed up with his co-hosts that he walked off set.

Later, "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace came on the show and railed against "Fox and Friends" for what he called "Obama-bashing."

The importance of meaningful access to Congressional information

Why is meaningful access to congressional information important? Congressional information allows people to properly evaluate what their members of Congress are doing and who they are doing it for. Congress works for us and we, therefore, should be able to know everything that has to do with the business of lawmaking. Not having this information is like interviewing someone with a blank resume. The Sunlight Foundation, in honor of Sunshine Week, brings you, “The interview that transparency forgot.” Ask yourself if it is possible to hire someone without essential work experience information.

Friday Nite Retro

TGIF! It was the week from hell here. . .oh well, a little music will make it all better! Tonight's focus is on my favorite GoGo - Jane Wiedlin. You know her as the rhythm guitarist for that group, but she was involved in numerous other projects over the years.

The Oconomowoc, Wisconsin born Wiedlin turns the big FIVE-OH in May of this year. Back in her younger days, Wiedlin was part of the LA punk scene that spawned bands like X and The Dickies and went by the name "Jane Drano."

As a member of The Go-Go's, she had a brief love affair with Specials and Fun Boy Three member Terry Hall. It was the ups and downs of this long-distance celebrity relationship with Hall that inspired the hit Go-Go's song "Our Lips Are Sealed":

Our Lips are Sealed

In 1983, Wiedlin recorded "Cool Places" with the new wave band Sparks:

Cool Places

In 1984, she was the first to leave the Go-Go's to pursue a solo career. Her first solo album, the aptly named Jane Wiedlin (1985), spawned this single:

Blue Kiss

Her sophomore effort, Fur (1988) spawned a top-ten single and personal favorite of mine:

Rush Hour

As well as a follow up single:

Inside a Dream

These firs
t three efforts sold poorly and she was dropped from EMI Records. She formed a punk band, froSTed (the unusual orthography coming from the fact Wiedlin is a huge Star Trek fan), which released an album in 1995 to good reviews but poor sales. Kissproof World was released in 2000 on Painful Discs Records.

After a successful tour and clearing of the animosity which had contributed to the original spli
t, The Go-Go's reformed as a regular unit in 2000. The band released God Bless the Go-Go's in 2001, on Beyond Records, its first studio effort in 17 years. However it failed to crack the top 40. Beyond Records folded soon after.

Wiedlin has also acted in movies and provided the voice for several characters on TV and the big screen, including a one-liner role in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Her other roles include Joan of Arc (with no spoken lines in English) in the time travel comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and an ill-fated singing telegram girl in the cult comedy/mystery film Clue. In 2000, she sang in the choir on the Frasier episode "They're Playing Our Song".

Wanna see what Jane's up to today? Drop by her official website, or visit her MySpace page. And that is a wrap on this episode of FNR - Have a GREAT weekend!

Richardson has endorsed Obama

Clinton's loss is Obama's gain

From Reuters:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson endorsed Barack Obama's bid for the Democratic nomination for U.S. president, Obama's aides said on Friday, in a big boost for the senator.

"I can confirm that he (Bill Richardson) is endorsing (Obama) and that he will be at the rally in Portland tomorrow," said an official with the Obama campaign.

Richardson's endorsement has been fiercely sought by both Obama and his rival Sen. Hillary Clinton in part because as a Hispanic he is seen as influential within the Latino community, which could be a key voting bloc in the November presidential election.

Hispanics, the fastest-growing segment of the electorate, largely backed Clinton in nominating contests on "Super Tuesday," with exit polls showing her winning two-thirds of the Latino vote in several states.

Obama, a senator from Illinois, and Clinton, a senator from New York and former first lady, are locked in a tight race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

They have both sought high-profile endorsements as a way to bolster their campaigns. Both have also actively courted former presidential candidate John Edwards, a former North Carolina senator. Edwards has yet to endorse either candidate.

Richardson, 60, was energy secretary and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President Bill Clinton and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1982-1997.

Richardson also ran for the Democratic nomination but abandoned his bid in January, stating he lacked the funds to continue after finishing fourth in voting in Iowa and New Hampshire.

A skilled negotiator and diplomat, the popular governor has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate or secretary of state in a Democratic administration.

Obama is due to hold a rally in Portland, Oregon, on Friday at 9:35 a.m. local time (12:35 p.m. EDT), his campaign said. He will then spend the rest of the day campaigning in the state, which holds a primary on May 20.

Obama's Passport File Breached

Three State Dept. employees involved:

Two contract employees of the State Department were fired and a third person was disciplined for accessing passport records of Sen. Barack Obama "without a need to do so," State Department officials confirmed to NBC News.

The three people who had access to Obama's passport records were contract employees of the department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, NBC News has learned. The unauthorized activity concerning Obama's passport information occurred in January.

"A monitoring system was tripped when an employee accessed the records of a high-profile individual,” a department official told NBC News. "When the monitoring system is tripped, we immediately seek an explanation for the records access. If the explanation is not satisfactory, the supervisor is notified."

Explaining why the contractors had access to the files, the official said: "The State Department uses cleared contractors to design, build and maintain our systems and cleared contract employees provide support to government employees and several steps of passport processing including data entry, file searches, customer service and quality control.

"Each time an employee logs on, he or she acknowledges the records are protected by the privacy act and that they are only available on a need-to-know basis," the official added.

Sen. Obama’s presidential campaign responded sternly, calling for a thorough investigation.

“This is an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an Administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement released Thursday night. “Our governments duty is to protect the private information of the American people, not use it for political purposes.

“This is a serious matter that merits a complete investigation, and we demand to know who looked at Senator Obama’s passport file, for what purpose, and why it took so long for them to reveal this security breach.”

The Obama Speech - Reactions

Two days after Obama's speech on race and politics in America, religious groups and academic bodies are enthusiastically embracing his words. Universities are moving to incorporate the issues Obama raised into classroom discussions and course work, and churches were trying to find ways to do the same in sermons and Bible studies.

Ed Schultz

The Rev. Joel Hunter, senior pastor of a mostly white evangelical church of about 12,000 in Central Florida, described Mr. Obama’s speech, in which the Democratic presidential candidate discussed his relationship with the former pastor of his home church in Chicago, as a kind of “Rorschach inkblot test” for the nation.

“It calls out of you what is already in you,” Dr. Hunter said, predicting that those desiring to address the topic would regard the speech as a spur, while those indifferent to issues of race might pay it little heed.

Dr. Hunter said the Obama speech led to a series of conversations Wednesday morning with his staff members. “We want for there to be healing and reconciliation, but unless it’s raised in a very public manner, it’s tough for us in our regular conversation to raise it,” he said.

Rev.Joseph Lowery

Janet Murguia, president of The National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy and social welfare group, hoped that Mr. Obama’s speech would help “create a safe space to talk about this, where people aren’t threatened or pigeonholed” and “can talk more openly and honestly about the tensions, both overt and as an undercurrent, that exist around race and racial politics.”

On the Internet and in many areas of the traditional news media, such a discussion was already taking shape. Some four million people watched Mr. Obama’s speech live, and it is now the top YouTube video. The speech has stimulated passionate discussion on scores of blogs of varying ideological tendencies, and an article about the speech in The New York Times has provoked more than 2,250 comments.

Roland Martin

On the ABC talk show “The View” on Wednesday morning, the co-hosts discussed the substance of Mr. Obama’s speech and its impact on the presidential campaign. “Finally we can talk about” race “without being afraid we are offending” others, one co-host,Barbara Walters, said, while Whoopi Goldberg said she “felt he was talking about stuff that we tiptoe around.”

Some conservative commentators, including Bill O'Reilly on Fox News, found positive elements in the Obama speech, which Mr. O’Reilly called “a mixed deal.” He criticized Mr. Obama for not repudiating Mr. Wright’s views in stronger terms but also said that Mr. Obama “was right that race remains an unresolved problem in America on both sides.”

Katie Couric

Around the country, ministers of the United Church of Christ, which is Mr. Obama’s denomination, are recommending in Holy Week newsletters that their congregants read or view Mr. Obama’s speech.

One message, sent from the Union Congregational Church in Montclair, N.J., said, “No matter what your party affiliation or your political persuasion, the conversations about race that have been elicited by the campaign are important.”

The message also cited a brief prayer, “Lord, help me to remember we are all your children,” and expressed the hope that “we take the high road” in addressing the issue.

Eagle Ray kills Woman

An unidentified Michigan woman died in a freak accident today off of the Florida Keys. The woman, 55, was sunbathing on a small boat when a large eagle ray jumped onto the craft and landed on her. Conflicting reports state either that the 80-100 pound ray crushed her or caused her to strike her head, or that the ray stung her in the neck.

Eagle Rays are common in the waters off South Florida and the Keys. They normally live close to the coast in depths of 3 to 60 feet and in exceptional cases they are found as deep as 900 feet.

These rays can grow extremely large; up to 17 feet in length with a wingspan of up to 10 feet. They also have a long tail which is armed with sharp barb, it looks like a whip and may be as long as the body.

Ivan Dixon has died at 76

Ivan Dixon, best known as Sgt. Kinchloe on "Hogan's Heroes", died on Sunday, March 16th. Dixon helped change racial stereotypes in his film and TV roles, was active in the Civil Rights movement, and president of Negro Actors for Action. After a long and celebrated career as an actor and director, he was the owner-operator of radio station KONI-FM in Maui. In 2001 he left the islands for health reasons and sold the radio station in 2002.

In his role as POW Staff Sergeant James Kinchloe in the hit TV series Hogan's Heroes, SSG Kinchloe's role was the communications officer; he would frequently be ordered by Colonel Hogan to encode a message and send it to Allied Headquarters in London, a submarine, or to the German underground. Dixon played Kinchloe from 1965 to 1970, making him the only original actor on Hogan's Heroes not to stay for the entire series (Hogan's Heroes finished in 1971, by which time Kenneth Washington had replaced him).

In 1964 he starred in the independent film Nothing But a Man, which was written and directed by Michael Roemer. He was practically unrecognizable as "Lonnie" in the cult classic Car Wash (1976). Dixon spent many years (1970–1993) behind the camera directing television shows and movies such as Trouble Man, The Rockford Files, The Bionic Woman, Magnum, P.I. and The A-Team.

He played a doctor and leader of a guerrilla movement in the controversial 1987 ABC miniseries Amerika, set in post-Soviet invasion Nebraska. Perhaps his most memorable scene was his dramatic rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, which had been banned by the puppet government led by Robert Urich.

Rocker Redoes Anthem for Barack Obama

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Jay Jay French wants to rock. He also wants Barack.

So the Twisted Sister guitarist has rerecorded the heavy metal band's anthem, "I Wanna Rock," which has become "I Want Barack."

French, a lifelong liberal Democrat whose mother campaigned for John F. Kennedy, said Barack Obama, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, has energized a new generation of voters who previously felt left out of politics.

"He has excited so many people," said French, who founded Twisted Sister in 1973, in a telephone interview Tuesday. "He has given sincere hope to people who have been out of the arena for years."

French plays guitar on the track, which features Paulie Z., singer for the band Z02, on vocals and lead guitar. They call the band Jay Jay French and Friends and stress this isn't a Twisted Sister project because that band's members are split on the presidential candidates.

The Obama camp had no immediate comment on the song.

It's not the first ode to Obama from the rock world. Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am has recorded and released two music videos, "Yes, We Can," which has garnered more than 5 million hits on YouTube.com, and the more recent "We Are the Ones."

French said an accompanying video will soon be released on YouTube, and hopes the song will someday be played at rallies for Obama, where Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" now reigns.

Obama's speech on race and politics

"Not this time"

Part One

Part Two

Part Three

Part Four

Below, courtesy of Huffington Post, are reactions to Barack Obama's "A More Perfect Union" speech:

The Corner, Charles Murray:

I read the various posts here on "The Corner," mostly pretty ho-hum or critical about Obama's speech. Then I figured I'd better read the text (I tried to find a video of it, but couldn't). I've just finished. Has any other major American politician ever made a speech on race that comes even close to this one? As far as I'm concerned, it is just plain flat out brilliant--rhetorically, but also in capturing a lot of nuance about race in America. It is so far above the standard we're used to from our pols.... But you know me. Starry-eyed Obama groupie.

The Politico, Ben Smith:

A smart colleague notes that this speech is the polar opposite of this year's other big speech on faith, in which Mitt Romney went to Texas to talk about Mormonism, but made just one reference to his Mormon faith.

Obama mentions Wright by name 14 times.

TPM, Josh Marshall:

I think I have to dissent from David's view that Obama didn't bring his A-game to the speech this morning. I was only able to listen/watch out of the corner of my eye because I was on deadline for something else. But my sense was that the tempo and tenor was suited to the occasion. The kind of stirring delivery he's made a trademark of in his victory celebrations would not have been appropriate for the moment.

Mother Jones, David Corn:

With racial sentiments swirling in the 2008 campaign--notably, Geraldine Ferraro's claim that Barack Obama is not much more than an affirmative action case and the controversy over his former pastor's over-the-top remarks-- Senator Obama on Tuesday morning responded to these recent fusses with a speech unlike any delivered by a major political figure in modern American history. While explaining--not excusing--Reverend Jeremiah Wright's remarks (which Obama had already criticized), he called on all Americans to recognize that even though the United States has experienced progress on the racial reconciliation front in recent decades (Exhibit A: Barack Obama), racial anger exists among both whites and blacks, and he said that this anger and its causes must be fully acknowledged before further progress can be achieved. Obama did this without displaying a trace of anger himself.

Atlantic.com, James Fallows:

It was a moment that Obama made great through the seriousness, intelligence, eloquence, and courage of what he said. I don't recall another speech about race with as little pandering or posturing or shying from awkward points, and as much honest attempt to explain and connect, as this one.

Radar, Charles Kaiser:

He did it.

No other presidential candidate in the last forty years has managed to speak so much truth so eloquently at such a crucial juncture in his campaign as Barack Obama did today. And he did it by speaking about race, the most persistent source of hatred among us since America began.

It turns out that a candidate for president with a white mother and a black father has a capacity that no one else has ever had before: he can articulate an equal understanding of black racism and white racism --and that makes it possible for him to condemn both of them with equal passion.

Atlantic.com, Andrew Sullivan:

But I do want to say that this searing, nuanced, gut-wrenching, loyal, and deeply, deeply Christian speech is the most honest speech on race in America in my adult lifetime. It is a speech we have all been waiting for for a generation. Its ability to embrace both the legitimate fears and resentments of whites and the understandable anger and dashed hopes of many blacks was, in my view, unique in recent American history.

The American Prospect, Kate Sheppard:

Obama's much-anticipated speech on race today hit the appropriate tone not just for addressing the Jeremiah Wright flap, but for framing the relevance of his candidacy in general. It was best in the way it framed the discomfort and resentment in the discussion of race in America that has lead to a "racial stalemate" for so many years, and made race "a part of our union that we have not yet made perfect."

ABBA Drummer dead at 62

From a Reuters report:

Ola Brunkert, former drummer for the Swedish pop band ABBA, was found dead with cuts to his neck in the garden of his house on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Police said Monday an autopsy showed it was an accident.

A neighbor found the body of 62-year-old Ola Brunkert on Sunday evening at his house in a coastal area outside the eastern town of Arta, a Civil Guard spokesman told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

He said an autopsy was carried out and confirmed initial investigations. "It was an accident," he said.

The spokesman said Brunkert hit his head against a glass door in his dining room, shattering the glass and cutting himself in the neck. He managed to wrap a towel around his neck and left the house to seek help, but collapsed in the garden.

Brunkert lived in the coastal apartment complex of Betlem in the municipality of Arta, in the eastern part of Mallorca.

Brunkert had lived in Arta for around 20 years. His wife, Inger. died less than a year ago, an Arta municipal official told the AP. She spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to discuss the case.

ABBA band member Benny Anderson told Swedish daily Expressen he was sad to hear of the drummer's death. "It is tragic," he said.

Band member Bjorn Ulvaeus added that Brunkert had been "one of the best."

Bill Clinton to appear in Ft.Wayne tomorrow

Bill Clinton is scheduled to appear at the Grand Wayne Center, 120 W. Jefferson Blvd, in downtown Fort Wayne tomorrow. The event starts at 6:45 PM in Center Hall "C". No tickets will be distributed for the event. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis for the “Solutions for America” rally in support of Hillary Clinton. Hillary supporters are holding a sign-making rally at Allen County Democratic Headquarters at the time of this writing.

In a show of solidarity with Markos, I will not be in attendance. Up until the events of this primary season, I considered Bill Clinton to be one of my generation's greatest presidents. He may still deserve that ranking, however, I find serious faults with the means to his ends these days. According to an AOL "Hot Seat" Poll, 69% of my fellow Hoosiers have agreed with me that Mr.Clinton's image has been damaged by his role in his wife's campaign. Negative campaigning and dirty politics are what we normally expect from across the aisle, not from our own, and especially not from our "heros".

It comes as no surprise to regular readers of this blog that I am a strong supporter of Barack Obama. I truly believe that he is a clean break from the past, and an instrument of change. Mrs.Clinton, although an obviously better choice than John McCain, is neither of the above. As with Mr.McCain, she represents more of the same. A kinder, gentler more of the same, but more of the same nonetheless. I care not about "experience" after having experienced it. I prefer honesty. I want vision. I desire to be hopeful once more. Mr.Obama does that for me. . .

He offers a new campaign style. One that obviously caught you off guard, even though it was introduced by Howard Dean four years ago. It's a strategy that rightly decides that it's insane to continue doing the same thing while expecting different results. The Clinton strategy is to grab several large states and catapult to victory. The Dean Obama 50-state strategy steamrolls all over the old way, and places wins for Democrats not only in the normal strategic battlegrounds, but in solid red states such as Wyoming and Montana and many others. The winds of change are blowing, sir. And the skinny little kid with the funny name, that you laughingly and erroneously wrote off, set your wife's campaign back onto it's very heels during the Super Tuesday contests where you expected to wrap up her nomination.

Mr.Clinton - I respect you for the positive things you accomplished during your tenure. We'll not discuss NAFTA or Clear Channel in this post. And I respect Mrs.Clinton for what she endured via your other "accomplishments". But I cannot forgive your dismissal of Ronald Reagan's first rule (as applied to OUR party) : Thou shalt speak no ill of your fellow Democrats. How ironic that I should serve up such a reminder to America's "first black president" after his attempts to use the politics of racial division against the possible REAL version. . .as you once uttered in reply to another group, "How DARE you". . .

Florida "revote" tabled by state party

State Party punts to DNC Committee

The Florida Democrats have reached their decision. They will not be holding a revote for their primary, banking instead on the decision of the Rules & Bylaws Committee:
Last week, the Florida Democratic Party laid out the only existing way that we can comply with DNC Rules - a statewide revote run by the Party - and asked for input. Thousands of people responded. We spent the weekend reviewing your messages, and while your reasons vary widely, the consensus is clear: Florida doesn't want to vote again. So we won't. A party-run primary or caucus has been ruled out, and it's simply not possible for the state to hold another election, even if the Party were to pay for it. Republican Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio refuses to even consider that option. Florida is finally moving to paper ballots, which is a good thing, but it means that at least 15 counties do not have the capacity to handle a major election before the June 10th DNC primary deadline. This doesn't mean that Democrats are giving up on Florida voters. It means that a solution will have to come from the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee, which is scheduled to meet again in April.

David Paterson is sworn in

"Good Natured Guv" replaces "My Way or the Highway"

New York's new Governor David Paterson drew applause and hoots of laughter as he delivered an inaugural speech laden with jokes about fellow Albany lawmakers. Paterson made fun of his disability - he is legally blind - by recounting how Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver prevented him from cracking his gavel down on a glass. According to Paterson, Silver said that event would have turned the legislature into a "Jewish wedding." Paterson also knocked the republican State Senator Joseph Bruno's tough-guy person by saying he'd go to his upstate New York ranch for dinner only if he brought his "taster" along:

Supply and Demand

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest, and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort.

He further announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.”

The villagers rounded up all of their savings and bought all the monkeys.

Then they never saw the man nor his assistant again, only monkeys everywhere!

Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market works.

Obama's Rezko narrative

Obama satisfied all doubts about Rezko

From The Chicago Tribune:

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama waited 16 months to attempt the exorcism. But when he finally sat down with the Tribune editorial board Friday, Obama offered a lengthy and, to us, plausible explanation for the presence of now-indicted businessman Tony Rezko in his personal and political lives.

The most remarkable facet of Obama's 92-minute discussion was that, at the outset, he pledged to answer every question the three dozen Tribune journalists crammed into the room would put to him. And he did.

When we endorsed Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination Jan. 27, we said we had formed our opinions of him during 12 years of scrutiny. We concluded that the professional judgment and personal decency with which he has managed himself and his ambition distinguish him.

Nothing Obama said in our editorial board room Friday diminishes that verdict.

Manhattan Crane Collapse

The vacant space between these two buildings, where the tower of a massive crane juts out from, was a five story residential building until approximately 2:20 pm today. The 15-story crane, working on a building on East 51st Street and 2nd Avenue, also demolished a restaurant in the bottom of the building that was ironically named Fubar. Although the pub was closed at the time, an employee is feared to have been in the restaurant at the time. Here is video from the scene:

At 5:50 p.m., one man was recovered from the rubble alive and taken to a local hospital. So far, officials have reported at least 10 people injured, three critically. The rescue effort was focused on a woman who was said to be in Fubar when the town house above was flattened by the collapsing crane. Rescue dogs, thermal-imaging cameras, and listening devices are all being used in the recovery effort. Firefighters will be working through the night.

The owner of the crane, New York Cranes, was implicated in another crane accident from October 2006 wherein an 800-pound chunk of crane fell on a New York City cab, almost killing the driver and h is passenger. The crane fell on the right side of the vehicle; fortunately for the two occupants, both were on the left side.

Obama's Plainfield visit

From Lynn Sweet of the Sun-Times:

Speaking in a gym at Plainfield High School, making his first visit to Indiana of his presidential campaign in advance of the May primary here, Obama said “everybody, you know, senses there has been this shift.”

This comes as Obama is trying to distance himself from Wright, whose controversial sermons—on videotape—threaten Obama’s presidential quest. Obama talked about Wright in his stump speech as a man of fiery rhetoric—but one who talked to him about Jesus.” Obama's reference to Kennedy is about a speech he made in this state after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Click HERE for the rest of the story.

A short video of the crowd at the rally

And another report, this one from the Indianapolis Star.

Obama spoke for about 20 minutes, then answered questions from the audience for another 45 minutes on everything from whether he would change No Child Left Behind -- he would -- to saving Social Security. On that, he proposed raising the cap on payroll taxes. Right now, people pay payroll taxes only on their first $97,000 in income. That means, he said, that 94 percent of folks pay on every dime they make, while billionaire Warren Buffett pays only on a tiny fraction of his income.

If elected, he said, he would focus immediately on three things: Bringing the troops home in a responsible manner; universal health care reform that continues private insurance but helps people afford it; and a new energy policy. Do those things, he said, and other programs such as improving education become doable; fail, and the nation would be bankrupt.

People reacted with a disappointed "aah" when Obama finally said his time was up. But he promised to be back to campaign aggressively in Indiana.

And the Herald Bulletin:

Kokomo resident James Whitfield originally was a supporter of Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party nomination for president, but has switched allegiance to Barack Obama.

“I’m an Obama supporter,” Whitfield said, waiting for the doors to the high school gymnasium to open. “I’m really excited about it. Both candidates are good.”

Whitfield said he first started by supporting Clinton, even making a monetary contribution, but didn’t like some of the political tricks her campaign was using and switched to Obama.

“I’m more interested in issues than digging up dirt,” he said. “If he (Obama) wanted, there would be plenty to dig up on her (Clinton).”

Spitzer was "taken out"

An expose by Greg Palast:

While New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was paying an ‘escort’ $4,300 in a hotel room in Washington, just down the road, George Bush’s new Federal Reserve Board Chairman, Ben Bernanke, was secretly handing over $200 billion in a tryst with mortgage bank industry speculators.

Both acts were wanton, wicked and lewd. But there’s a BIG difference. The Governor was using his own checkbook. Bush’s man Bernanke was using ours.

This week, Bernanke’s Fed, for the first time in its history, loaned a selected coterie of banks one-fifth of a trillion dollars to guarantee these banks’ mortgage-backed junk bonds. The deluge of public loot was an eye-popping windfall to the very banking predators who have brought two million families to the brink of foreclosure.

Up until Wednesday, there was one single, lonely politician who stood in the way of this creepy little assignation at the bankers’ bordello: Eliot Spitzer.

The mainstream media has chosen to lay the blame for the current sub-prime mortgage crisis on "poor choices" by consumers, but these borrowers were targeted under the scheme revealed by Palast:

The press has swallowed Wall Street’s line that millions of US families are about to lose their homes because they bought homes they couldn’t afford or took loans too big for their wallets. Ba-LON-ey. That’s blaming the victim.

Here’s what happened. Since the Bush regime came to power, a new species of loan became the norm, the ‘sub-prime’ mortgage and its variants including loans with teeny “introductory” interest rates. From out of nowhere, a company called ‘Countrywide’ became America’s top mortgage lender, accounting for one in five home loans, a large chunk of these ‘sub-prime.’

Here’s how it worked: The Grinning Family, with US average household income, gets a $200,000 mortgage at 4% for two years. Their $955 monthly payment is 25% of their income. No problem. Their banker promises them a new mortgage, again at the cheap rate, in two years. But in two years, the promise ain’t worth a can of spam and the Grinnings are told to scram - because their house is now worth less than the mortgage. Now, the mortgage hits 9% or $1,609 plus fees to recover the “discount” they had for two years. Suddenly, payments equal 42% to 50% of pre-tax income. The Grinnings move into their Toyota.

Spitzer is guilty of several offenses, poor judgment not the least. But these predators were in search of a way to take him out to cover their own tracks. Unfortunately for Spitzer and his family, he provided an easy mark. It's worthy of your time to read the rest of Palast's investigations, available here.

Friday Nite Retro

Welcome once more to the den of obscurity that I like to call "Friday Nite Retro"! I'm going to have to start numbering these things, I think this is about #75. . .tonight we journey back to the early 1980's, when the second British invasion occurred and they still played music videos on MTV 24/7 instead of that shit that they do now and, HEY, get off of my lawn!! Damned kids. . .

Anyhoo, back in the day, there were some lads who crossed the pond and took America by storm for a few years. I recall playing their albums over and over - they were a personal favorite of mine. They formed in 1980 and went by the moniker of The Fixx. . .the group was formed by college friends Cy Curnin (vocals) and Adam Woods (drums), who placed an ad for additional members. Jamie West-Oram (guitar), Rupert Greenall (keyboards) and Charlie Barret (bass) joined the band as a result. This first song, from 1982, is my all-time favorite Fixx tune:

From:
Shuttered Room

Stand or Fall

Red Skies at Night

Saved by Zero

Charlie Barret left just after the recording of the first album and was replaced by Alfie Agius. Agius' stint in the band was short-lived as well; he left in the middle of sessions for the following album. His bass work is featured on the album's two hit singles "Saved By Zero" and "One Thing Leads to Another" though. The bass spot was then filled by Dan K. Brown, who remained with the band until 1994.

From:
Reach the Beach

One Thing Leads to Another

From:
Streets of Fire Soundtrack

Despite significant rock and pop radio play, "Streets of Fire" soundtrack inexplicably denied the single release for "Deeper and Deeper". A longer version, now accepted as the definitive version, wound up on the B-side of "Are We Ourselves?".

Deeper and Deeper

From:
Phantoms

Are We Ourselves

From:
Walkabout

Secret Separation

From:
Ink

How Much is Enough (1991)

I hope you got your Fixx tonight. . .but, if not, drop by and visit the band's official website.

On My Faith and Church - Barack Obama

A special guest column by Barack Obama:

The pastor of my church, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who recently preached his last sermon and is in the process of retiring, has touched off a firestorm over the last few days. He's drawn attention as the result of some inflammatory and appalling remarks he made about our country, our politics, and my political opponents.

Let me say at the outset that I vehemently disagree and strongly condemn the statements that have been the subject of this controversy. I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies. I also believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it's on the campaign stump or in the pulpit. In sum, I reject outright the statements by Rev. Wright that are at issue.

Because these particular statements by Rev. Wright are so contrary to my own life and beliefs, a number of people have legitimately raised questions about the nature of my relationship with Rev. Wright and my membership in the church. Let me therefore provide some context.

As I have written about in my books, I first joined Trinity United Church of Christ nearly twenty years ago. I knew Rev. Wright as someone who served this nation with honor as a United States Marine, as a respected biblical scholar, and as someone who taught or lectured at seminaries across the country, from Union Theological Seminary to the University of Chicago. He also led a diverse congregation that was and still is a pillar of the South Side and the entire city of Chicago. It's a congregation that does not merely preach social justice but acts it out each day, through ministries ranging from housing the homeless to reaching out to those with HIV/AIDS.

Most importantly, Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life. In other words, he has never been my political advisor; he's been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.

The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation. When these statements first came to my attention, it was at the beginning of my presidential campaign. I made it clear at the time that I strongly condemned his comments. But because Rev. Wright was on the verge of retirement, and because of my strong links to the Trinity faith community, where I married my wife and where my daughters were baptized, I did not think it appropriate to leave the church.

Let me repeat what I've said earlier. All of the statements that have been the subject of controversy are ones that I vehemently condemn. They in no way reflect my attitudes and directly contradict my profound love for this country.

With Rev. Wright's retirement and the ascension of my new pastor, Rev. Otis Moss, III, Michelle and I look forward to continuing a relationship with a church that has done so much good. And while Rev. Wright's statements have pained and angered me, I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States.

FOX Attacks! - Obama - Part 2

The latest from Brave New Films:

No surprise that FOX has been at it again: smearing, distorting, attacking Obama. What is infuriating and requires IMMEDIATE ACTION is that so many in the media have been catching the FOX virus and spreading it. By way of a cure, we bring you the next installment in our highly successful FOX Attacks! series. Together, we have battled them effectively, halted their fake debates, and put pressure on Bill O'Reilly for on his attacks on homeless vets. And so far, over 6 million people have seen our FOX Attacks!

A special thanks to all of you who contributed to the tickers for this film! Your contributions made this video possible. You turned this into a collaborative filmmaking process, declaring our collective outrage over FOX's propaganda. If you didn't get the chance to contribute this time around, you can put your message to Murdoch in the next FOX Attacks! film for a contribution of $199. Space is
very limited though, we can only include 25 messages.

Of course, Obama isn't the only Democratic nominee that FOX and their ilk have gone after in this Presidential race. Chris Matthews, once a Roger Ailes hire, has been demonizing Hillary Clinton every chance he gets. Our friends at Media Matters have more on how Matthews is modeling himself after Bill O'Reilly. With your support we can and will continue the fight:

NRCC Campaign Fraud Exposed

Up to $1M embezzled

Christopher J. Ward, former treasurer for the National Republican Congressional Committee diverted as much as $1 million of the organization's funds into his personal accounts. The GOP official disclosure, announced yesterday, described an alleged scheme that could become one of the largest political frauds in recent history.

Ward allegedly used wire transfers to funnel money out of NRCC coffers and into other political committee accounts he controlled as treasurer for at least four years, NRCC leaders and lawyers said in their first public statement since they turned the matter over to the FBI six weeks ago. I wonder if there are hookers involved in this one. . .

What to do with your tax rebate. . .

Other'n filling up your car. . .

As you may have heard, the present Republican Administration said that each and every one of us would now get a nice tax rebate. Of course, that is a traditional Republican way of buying votes.

So, what should we spend it on?

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.

If we spend it on gasoline it will all go to the Arabs,

If we purchase a computer it will all go to India.

If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will all go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala,

If we purchase a good car it will all go to Japan or Europe.

If we purchase useless crap it will all go to Taiwan and none of it will help the
American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America!! So, the only way to keep that money here at home is to buy hookers and beer and visit Indian casinos, since those are the only businesses still in the US.

Hmmm, maybe Gov. Spitzer had the right idea. . .

The New York Times interviewed
"Kristen," nee Ashley Youmans, now Ashley Alexandra Dupre, age 22. She is an aspiring singer, and an accomplished "hummer" who lives in New York City. Perhaps Ashley should have been standing on that stage with Governor Spitzer instead of his wife. I'm not sure why all of these wives choose to appear in all of the assorted media after their husbands have admitted to affairs with other women, other men, assorted farm animals, Barney the dinosaur, or whatever sick shit they are into. If I was the injured spouse in one of these scenarios, my hand would be tightly clenching the appendage that my s/o had used to publicly humiliate me and enjoying their painful squirming.

"Small states don't matter"

Via TPM:

Barack Obama's likely delegate take from Mississippi appears to be a +5 edge — while he won the popular vote by 24 points, Hillary Clinton's narrow win in the First Congressional District will apparently keep the delegate margin at 19-14.

But here's something to put it in perspective: Between the Mississippi and Wyoming results alone, Obama will have just about undone Hillary's small delegate gains from March 4 "big states" of Ohio and Texas (Obama actually WON Texas- check the delegate count).

Here are the latest delegate estimates from various news organization, including super-delegates unless otherwise noted:

CNN: Obama 1,608, Clinton 1,478
CNN: Obama 1,402, Clinton 1,240 (Not counting supers)

Mary Ann meets Mary Jane

A surprise birthday party for Dawn Wells, the actress who played Mary Jane Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," ended with a nearly three-hour tour of the Teton County sheriff's office and jail when the 69-year-old was caught with marijuana in her vehicle while driving home.

The actress was pulled over on October 18th of last year after a deputy sheriff observed her swerve across the fog lines and center lines of State Highway 33 and repeatedly speed up and slow down. In addition to a strong smell of marijuana, the officer noted that all four of the vehicles windows were down and that Miss Wells was not wearing a jacket.

Wells claimed that she'd just dropped off three hitchhikers who began smoking in her vehicle, but several half-smoked joints were found in the ashtrays and a field sobriety test was failed. Wells was arrested and released on $4,ooo bond. She plead not guilty and was scheduled for trial tomorrow, but has avoided that by plea agreement. She will serve six months' unsupervised probation, in addition to five days served and a fine of $410.50. More serious charges were dropped in return for the plea bargain.

Now we know why she had such a hold over Gilligan - it WAS the coconut cream pies. Or at least the secret ingredient. . .the more you eat, the more you want to eat! I'm surprised they EVER got off of that godforsaken island!

Admiral Fallon stepping down

John McCain "giddy" over news:

The lone voice of sanity and restraint in the Bush administration's military is resigning, and possibly resigning America to an attack on Iran. Admiral William Fallon, the top U.S. military commander for the Middle East, is leaving that position effective March31. Fallon had vowed that an attack on Iran "will not happen on my watch."

When Fallon assumed command of Centcom one year ago, BushCo was noisily pounding the war drums and making a case for attacking Iran. Fallon calmly and deliberately pushed back against that effort. As the admiral stepped up his opposition to an Iran attack throughout 2007, friction with BushCo increased as well. It's been widely speculated that the admiral would be forced out this year, although his resignation seems to be of his own choice. An Esquire piece published just last week predicted that Fallon would be removed to make way for a general who was more "pliable" to war with Iran:

If, in the dying light of the Bush administration, we go to war with Iran, it'll all come down to one man. If we do not go to war with Iran, it'll come down to the same man. He is that rarest of creatures in the Bush universe: the good cop on Iran, and a man of strategic brilliance. His name is William Fallon, although all of his friends call him "Fox," which was his fighter-pilot call sign decades ago. [...]

You can be sure that John McCain is somewhere singing his favorite Beach Boys parody with that crazed smile upon his face. . .

Randy Pausch's last lecture

Father's final message to his children:

This is Randy Pausch. He's 47 years old. He's a Carnegie Mellon computer science professor. He's a father of three young children. He's dying from pancreatic cancer. You'd never know it to listen to him if he didn't tell you outright. Last fall, he gave a "final lecture", normally a hypothetical exercise where one pretends to have one last audience and give one's final thoughts before leaving this world. Except, as he says, I have this elephant here in the room with me.

Watch his "final lecture" and take a moment to re-evaluate your life and what's important to you. I thank Dream Street Rose for bringing this video, and this amazing man, to my attention:

Conyers & Pelosi grow a pair. Finally.

Duo attempt a "Watergate style" maneuver.

Stating that "we will not allow the administration to steamroll Congress", House Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers today sued former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten . The suit claims that Miers and Bolton are not immune from their obligation to testify and produce documents as requested by Congress relating to the politically motivated dismissals of nine U.S. attorneys.

Conyers expressed confidence that, much like the Watergate scandal, the federal courts will agree that the Bush administration's position is at odds with constitutional principles. In the Watergate case, the Supreme Court confirmed the legitimacy of the executive privilege doctrine, yet found the privilege to be qualified and rejected Nixon's assertion of privilege over the White House tape recordings. That ruling prompted Nixon to surrender the tapes to prosecutors and ultimately resign from office.

Today's case was assigned to U.S. District Judge John Bates, a Bush appointee and former prosecutor in the Whitewater criminal investigation of the Clintons in the 1990s. The House had first issued a contempt citation against the pair, but AG Mukasey refused to refer the House's contempt citation to a grand jury, stating that neither Bolten nor Myers had committed a crime. That action prompted Speaker Pelosi to give authority to the Judiciary Committee authority to pursue Bolten and Myers in federal court.

Obama - "I'm not running for vice-president"

#1 says "no" to #2 slot.

Barack Obama responded today to the Clinton's repeated suggestions of a joint "dream ticket." Said the senator at an afternoon rally: "I just want everybody to absolutely clear: I am not running for vice president. I am running to be president of the United States of America." He also addressed what some have suggested is the motive underlying the discussion; namely, that Clinton is seeking to convince voters to support her as a means to secure both Dems on a general election ticket:

"I won twice as many states as Sen. Clinton. I won more of the popular vote than Sen. Clinton. I have more delegates than Sen. Clinton. So I don't know how someone in second place can offer the vice presidency to someone in first place. If I was in second place I could understand but I am in first place right now."
